When emergencies happen, Victoria Park Animal Hospital is the place you want by your side. Our team is trained to respond quickly, calmly, and compassionately to urgent situations, giving your pet the immediate attention they deserve. Whether it’s an unexpected illness, an injury, or something that simply doesn’t feel right, we’re here to help — and the best part is, we’re open 7 days a week. With access to advanced diagnostics, experienced veterinary professionals, and a caring support staff, you can count on us to guide your pet through even the most stressful moments with skill and heart. 

Below is a list of the most common emergencies that we treat.

Common Emergencies We Treat:

Trauma Injury:


  • Hit by car ( HBC ) 
  • Falls from height
  • Animal fights/bites
  • Lacerations or deep wounds
  • Fractures or broken bones
  • Gunshot or puncture wounds
  • Burns ( Chemical, Electrical, Or thermal ) 

Respiratory Distress:

 

  • Difficulty breathing ( Dyspnea ) 
  • Choking or airway obstruction
  • Collapsing Trachea 
  • Asthma ( Especially in cats ) 
  • Heatstroke leading to respiratory distress. 

Toxin or Poison Ingestion:

 

  • Human medication ( e.g , Ibuprofen, acetaminophen ) 
  • Chocolate, xylitol, grapes, / raisins
  • Antifreeze ( Ethylene Glycol ) 
  • Rodenticides ( Rat Poison ) 
  • Household Cleaners or Chemicals
  • Toxic Plants ( e.g., lilies in cats ) 

Allergic Reactions:

 

  • Facial swelling
  • Hives or severe itching
  • Anaphylaxis ( life threatening allergic reaction) 
  • Vaccine reactions

Seizures & Neurological Emergencies

 

  • Single cluster seizures
  • Status epilepticus ( Prolonged seizure activity ) 
  • Sudden Disorientation or loss of balance 
  • Head Trauma

Gastrointestinal Emergencies:

 

  • Persistent emesis
  • Foreign body ingestion
  • Intestinal Obstruction
  • Pancreatitis 

Urogenital Emergencies:

 

  • Urinary Obstruction ( Especially Male cats ) 
  • Difficulty or inability to urinate
  • Pyometra ( uterine infection ) 
  • Dystocia ( difficult labor ) 
  • Prolapse ( rectal, vaginal ) 

Cardiovascular Emergencies:

 

  • Collapse or fainting ( syncope ) 
  • Sudden weakness or inability to stand 
  • Heart Failure
  • Pericardial Effusion ( Fluid around the heart ) 

Eye & Ear Emergencies:

 

  • Acute eye injuries or prolapsed eye ( Proptosis ) 
  • Sudden blindness
  • Head tilt , severe ear pain, or disorientation ( Inner ear infections ) 

Other Critical Conditions:

  

  • Heatstroke 
  • Hypoglycemia ( especially in puppies, kittens, diabetic pets.
  • Hypothermia 
  • Insect Stings
  • Severe pain or vocalizing
